I explore Gualan for a few days and try to capture everything around me.

This young girl carries corn on her head: something that is very common in rural Guatemala. The children often do tasks and work to help their family instead of going to school.image

I get such an amazing feeling from exploring this town. There are all sorts of sounds, smells, and sights that are so different from back home.image

GUATEMALA - PART ONE

image

I lived in Guatemala for a few years, but had not visited for 6 years. Going back was a great experience for me. Being there as a photographer for the first time made everything feel so new to me, yet so incredibly familiar.

image

As the plane gets lower and all the boxy houses appear I feel a little bit of culture shock. It’s so incredibly different from where I live now. Excitement overcomes me in the plane for the adventure I’m about to have.

image

At the airport we are greeted by warm air. I had almost forgotten what this felt like since back home in Chicago it was snowing and -30 F. A friend picks us up and we drive through Guatemala City to a bus stop.

image

This place is called Paseo Cayala and it was built while I was gone. It’s a beautiful independent city in the middle of  the chaotic Guatemala city.image

We make it to the bus stop and take a 5 hour bus ride from Guatemala City to Gualan, where my grandparents live. My window is wide open and the breeze feels so wonderful on my face.image

I snap a lot of pictures from the window.image

image

image

image

It gets darker and darker and I can’t help but fall asleep.image

The next morning I am happily awoken by roosters at my grandmas house (something I used to find incredibly annoying).

Squash and Frost - October Days

I’ve really been enjoying this past month. Treating myself to pumpkin spice lattes and candles. The best part about living here is being able to see the seasons change. All this changing going on outside reminds me to look inside. Not only have I put away my summer clothes & stocked up my closet with cozy sweaters, but I’ve also taken a few steps towards becoming the person I want to be (:

APPLE PICKING - Hobart, IN

Chris & I drove to Indiana & went apple picking at County Line Orchard. I’ve never gone apple picking before & I absolutely loved it. I definitely recommend doing it if you never have. We had so much fun taking pictures, walking through sunflower fields, filling our bags with apples, & becoming friends with the tractor driver. On our way out we bought a fresh apple pie and the most delicious apple cider donuts.

HELLO FALL - self-portraits

September has always marked the end of summer… for me that always felt like the end of happiness & freedom. Things feel really different this year. I feel the breeze becoming stronger and I see the leaves losing chlorophyll & it doesn’t make me sad. My environment is changing, but it doesn’t feel like it’s dying. I’m excited for the crunchy leaves under my shoes, the pumpkins, big sweaters, hot drinks, & the beautiful colors.  It’s amazing to witness nature and its wonders. I am celebrating the end of summer & greeting fall.
